Around 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The liquid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then located numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state initial examinations suggest the fluid was probably human blood.

"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the case" and have appealed to the community for tips.

An important political figure commented the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
