Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
