The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
